Hi,

I've met some of you in years past when I'm visiting VT. I'm staying in Arlington again and would like to meet up with a group or anyone for a run while I'm there. I'll do anything from 5-13 miles. I'm pretty slow on trails because I don't run on them much when I'm home in NJ, but usually train at anything from sub-8:00 for shorter runs to 8:30 or so on longer runs.

Karyn

I just read about a run that's going across the US to honor service members killed in Operation Enduring Freedom and Operation Iraqi Freedom. They're asking runners everywhere to run on their last day, August 24th, in honor of our fallen service members. What do you think about BKVR organizing a run to honor any Vermonters who have been killed in these conflicts? The website is going to post the distance, mileage, and names of service members we're honoring. Check them out at www.runforthefallen.org

What do you think?

Lynn

Bromley to Mad Tom Notch, and Kelly Stand over Glastenbury to Bennington. Pace will be slow run/walking at times. Should be fun.

Thanks.
Greg.

I ran the Running of the Green (Island) this past Saturday morning. This is the first time I've run this race, which takes place in Green Island, NY. The weather was calling for possible rain or snow, but we ended up with about 37 degrees and cloudy skies. Perfect racing weather! The race seemed to be well organized. There were 383 participants, which was a lot more than I expected.

This was the first race I've been in since the end of October, so I was anxious to get out there and run hard. My training has been going well of late, but I still didn't know what time to expect, since I'd never been in a four mile race before. I set a loose goal of sub-27. The first mile went by faster than I expected, in 6:07. I realized that I was going too fast, and I slowed a bit. I saw a few people pass me at this point, but I just wanted to run my race. The second mile was in 6:19. Still a little faster than I wanted to be running, but I was feeling good. I started to pick off a few runners during mile 3, which was a pretty tough mile for me, 6:28. I stayed strong for the last mile, and passed a few more runners. With a sprint to the finish, I passed the 8th overall woman. My 4th mile was in 6:23, giving me a finish time of 25:17 (watch time). I finished 53rd overall, 11th in my 25-29 age group. I was very satisfied with the race I ran.

The course was very enjoyable. It was pancake flat and had a lot of turns. There was one water stop, which was plenty. Refreshments and food at the finish were great.

I noticed three other BKVR members ran the race as well (sorry if you were there and I didn't recognize you!):

83 26:43 Cady Kuzmich
188 31:48 Jen Kuzmich
266 35:57 Ed Doucette

Congrats to the three of you on great races!

 BKVR UPDATE

The bad news first. The dinner & run at CTK Conference Center on March 2nd is postponed to a later date. Too many people had conflicting activities, so no party this Sunday. Sorry. We’re working on a fresh date.

More bad news. My gauge said -12 degrees last night. Anyone with a lower reading?

Courage. Winter will soon be over. Sugar season is starting. The chickadees have changed to their Spring song. And….. we are lining up a series of Sunday group runs: some in Arlington/Sunderland, some in Bennington/Shaftsbury and some in Greenwich/Cambridge. Stay tuned.

For those of you who ice skate, there is free skating at Riley Rink in Manchester on Sunday, March 9th from 2:00 PM to 4:00 PM. The Manchester Fire Department will be there giving fire engine rides to any kid (including you) who wants one. The event marks the end of Riley Rink’s skating season. In the Spring the rink is used for indoor lacrosse and soccer training.

Our Scholarship Committee (5 strong) is beginning to vet this year’s applicants. Deadline April 1.

Side note: We also support local chapters of Girls on the Run with cash donations. Is there a group near you?

Dues due. If BKVR is on your “I forgot” list, put our name in the hat this month and send in a check.

RACES

Mar. 1, Sat. 9:30, Hawley Notch, 4M/7M, (snowshoe), Hawley, MA, www.runwmac.com.

Mar. 1, Sat. 10:00, North American Snowshoe Classic Races, 8K, Hyde Park Rec. The run through the woods on groomed trails and the dinner were so enjoyable that we are going back again this year on Sunday, March 2nd. Dinner, complete with salad, entr?e, vegetables, and dessert, is $5.00 a person. Reservations to 802-375-9655 are necessary so that the chef knows to prepare food for 30 or 80.

WEBSITE

Hi everyone,

I wanted to let you know that I've had some time to work on updating bkvr.org lately. I have migrated the site to a new server. This has allowed me to do a few things.

First, the message board has been updated. You will have to register and log in, but I think it is a huge upgrade over what we have been using. Please try it out and let me know what you think. I'm hoping that it will be a great tool for communicating amongst club members, but for that to happen, we need you to start and participate in some discussions.

The calendar has been updated, too, and I will be adding in race dates, group runs, and meetings soon. Actually, if someone could send me a list of known race dates or planned group runs, that would be great. The pace calculator and articles pages have been re-coded. More changes will trickle in during the next few weeks. If you have any suggestions, please feel free to contact me!

Thanks,
Sean Hannon
BKVR Webmaster

Check out the Manchester Journal published today, February 8th, for a front-page article on the Training for More group. It's a group of about 40 women, mostly over 40, who are training to run or walk the More half-marathon in NYC's Central Park on April 6th. These women are out in all kinds of weather putting in the miles. Training for a spring race is a great way to get through the winter!

Lynn
