I just read about a run that's going across the US to honor service members killed in Operation Enduring Freedom and Operation Iraqi Freedom. They're asking runners everywhere to run on their last day, August 24th, in honor of our fallen service members. What do you think about BKVR organizing a run to honor any Vermonters who have been killed in these conflicts? The website is going to post the distance, mileage, and names of service members we're honoring. Check them out at www.runforthefallen.org
I'd be up for participating. August 24th is a Sunday. Where were you thinking about having the run? Is anyone else up for it? Does anyone know of any service members that you want us to honor?
What is the significance of 8/24? A loop course through a populated area could be best, so runners of varying speed and endurance can all join in together.
A possible course would be to modify the Bennington Veterans' Day 5K course. Currently it is a flat, fast, or short 5K which starts near the Bennington Rec center which has a good parking lot. I 'd suggest keeping most of the current course, which also runs through the Vet's Home, but stretching it out so it runs through the Main Street Route 7 & 9 intersection for more visibility. Since it will not be a race, the overall distance is not important, but runners could do anywhere from 1-5 loops, and we can roughly measure the course. Runners may have to stop at the Main St intersection, but that's ok.
We have a BKVR meeting this Thursday, and I'll bring up all of these suggestions. I think it's important to involve the local Veterans' groups as well; ideas on how to do that?
can you send me your press release that was in tomorrow's Pennysaver? I'll post it to the Western Mass Athletic Club bulletin board. Perhaps some of their runners can join us! Ken FolKenS.uch@juno.com
