Continuing the time-honored family tradition of participating in the Turkey Trot, the extended Grieger clan gathered once again at Fisher Elementary on Thanksgiving morning. For the first time the head Buzzard, Lynn's dad Buzz Grieger, was in Arlington for the holiday. Since the entire Grieger clan was present, the event called for something special to commemorate the occasion. Hence the Turkey Buzzards were born. Distinguished by our stylish red earwarmers with the Turkey Buzzard slogan emblazoned boldly on the side, the clan exuberantly ran and walked the race.

So who are the Turkey Buzzards? Head Buzzard Buzz Grieger and lovely wife Val from northwest Indiana; sister Diane (recovering from knee surgery so slower than usual) and her son Jackson (first 5K) from sunny Houston; the Michigan group consisting of sister Gail (chief walker), husband Joel (designated child-watcher due to a back injury), Meredith (at age 3, she proudly finished her first kid's run), and youngest daughter Rowan (declined to run since she just learned to crawl at age 8 months); and of course the local clan: Lynn, Mike (PR'd in his third-ever 5K), Duncan (finished his first 5K ahead of dear old dad), and Nathan (5th place in his age group). It's a well-kept secret that Turkey Buzzards head east to Vermont every November, no matter how cold, rainy, icy, or snowy the weather. The Turkey Buzzards count this historic race as an integral part of our Thanksgiving tradition, followed closely by more pies than we can count, Chex mix with triple the amount of pretzels to avoid intra- clan warfare, and a certain beverage based on tomato juice and various seasonings. At least two members of the clan have participated in every Turkey Trot, and we intend on continuing the tradition. We challenge other family groups to join us next year, emblazoned with your traditional family logos (sorry, Turkey Buzzards are already taken), loudly cheering each other on. It helps that there are snacks and hot chocolate at the finish, or we'd never get everyone out of bed on time!
