By the beginning of August, I knew I should take a break. Fortunately, we were about to go on vacation, a week and a half in Nova Scotia and Maine. Surely there would be enough to keep my busy and out of my running shoes. I actually did start out pretty well, sea kayaking, whale watching, and eating (my favorite vacation pastime) occupying most of my time. But then I found out that Lunenburg has a running trail. And what better way to see this beautiful town’s historic district and waterfront? Then we were on to the Bay of Fundy, and come on, there was no way to not run along those cliffs and red sandy shores, marveling at the amazing tides, fishing villages, and wildlife! Finally, the Cat Ferry took us away from all of that…and straight into Bar Harbor and Acadia’s unparalleled network of trails. No self-respecting trail runner could possibly resist a daily two-hour jaunt around the park’s beautiful lakes and over its many rock summits. So back to Vermont, with my legs more tired than ever. I was just about to make another attempt at a week of non-running when I went out for a walk with the dogs this afternoon. A cool wind blew in from the north, some colorful leaves drifted down, and I failed again.
…..Speaking of wearing out, one of our races is in danger of doing just that. The Maple Leaf Half Marathon is a great event and Bruce Piispanen has done a remarkable job of directing it, virtually by himself, for the past three years. With Bruce stepping down after this year’s race, we need someone, or some organization, to step forward and keep it alive. Any interest, any ideas, call me at 802-375-2813.
…..Here is a thought that (I hope) will generate some discussion and some controversy. Our “core group” of volunteers and BKVR officers is beginning to burn out. Maintaining an organization and doing a lot of heavy lifting on many of our club races is really taking a toll. I know everyone has a favorite race and a favorite cause, but maybe it is time for us to contract our race schedule significantly.
How about one spring race (Bennington), one summer race (Batten Kill?), one “major event” race (Maple Leaf), and a fall 5K and 10K. Let everyone focus on those races and take some of the load off. Maybe that’s an awful idea, and I hope you have a better one. But one thing is for sure, we need some ideas!
We welcome your thoughts – write them in, call them in, post them on the bulletin board at www.bkvr.org, or talk it up on a Sunday morning run.
