LOPEZ AND NEWTON SHINE IN “MOONLIGHT” RUN

(Pownal, Vt.) Dusty Lopez and Kathleen Newton broke away from the rest of the field to win the men’s and women’s divisions of the “Moonlight in Vermont” midnight road race Saturday night in Pownal.

Lopez, a Williamstown, Mass., resident, finished the hilly, four-mile race in a convincing 22:52, exactly two mintues ahead of the second place finisher, Andrew Strniste of Granby, Ct. Jared Strait of Williamstown was third in 25.23.

Newton of Bennington placed 7^th overall with a time of 29:39. Megan Jennings of Williamstown was the second female finisher, with a time of 31:19, followed by Theresa Apple of Pittfield, Mass., in 31:56.

Lopez’ time was 25 seconds off the course record, set by Ian Kerr in 2002. Lopez also won the Bennington Road Race 10K last May.

The award for Most Visible in the Moonlight went to Ryan Scovil of Manchester Center, who ran the entire race carrying a lighted torch. Scovil finished with a time of 37:15.

The Moonlight in Vermont road race is hosted annually by the Battenkill Valley Runners and takes place on the Saturday night nearest the July full moon and benefits the Pownal Valley Fire Department. The 2007 race is scheduled for July 28. For more information, visit www.bkvr.org.
